GUE Eligibility & Selection Policy
The Guernsey Union d’Escrime ("GUE") is responsible for representative selection of fencers and a policy and selection process is required.
Guernsey also has some significant differences in comparison to the other country bodies which have a bearing in the selection process. Our geographical location does not easily allow fencers to gain UK ranking points and therefore selection criteria, if we are going to select our best fencers, needs to include an element of "local" knowledge.
To be considered for selection fencers must meet the criteria outlined below in the policy for eligibility for Guernsey.
Policy for eligibility
A fencer may not have fenced for another Senior or Junior National Team in the previous three years.
To become eligible for selection a fencer must be a current member of the GUE
To become eligible a fencer must meet one of the following criteria:
o One parent born in Guernsey
o Place of birth in Guernsey
o Residence or domicile in Guernsey
o Where a fencer over the age of 18 years is a member of Guernsey Fencing by virtue of residence only, a period in excess of four years residence in Guernsey is required before the fencer becomes eligible for selection.
o Where a fencer takes up residency whilst in Guernsey under the age of 18 years no such qualifying period is required.
o Having previously been selected by the GUE to fence for Guernsey and not having fenced for any other country in the intervening period.

Individual & Team
Domestic, National and International Competitions
The GUE will advertise to fencers, through the fencing clubs, the details of the competition and establish interest in the event.
The GUE will review the applicants together with the criteria as set by the competition organisers and select the fencers and team. If selection is required through a qualifying competition, as confirmed by the competition organisers, then the GUE shall run a qualifying competition.
If a qualifying competition is required, the highest placed fencers will be selected.
In the cases where selection is required and a qualifying competition is not, it is at the full discretion of the GUE, together with the selected Team Manager and Team Capitan, to select, with particular consideration being given to Island and Channel Island Results, in the current year.
The GUE may exercise their discretion to select fencers in circumstances when the team places have not been filled through the unavailability of the selected fencers.
The only grounds for appeal will be if fencers are unable to attend the qualifying competition. Any such appeal should be made in writing to the GUE within two weeks of the publication of the selection or at least two weeks before the event whichever is the greater.
